Half-Pound Hamburger Steak
Half-Pound Hamburger steak
Imagine this:
Fresh ground beef.
Smothered with sautéed onions & gravy.
Served with a side salad & homemade mashed potatoes.
Inspired by the very first Hamburger steak I ever ate.
You hungry?
There’s a reason why this recipe was the 2nd ever to make it to this site.
Texans LOVE steak.
And we like to find creative ways to craft our steak dinners.
We enjoy the art of smothering- throwing sautéed veggies, melted cheese, and/or gravy on top of steaks.
Let’s not forget our need to make the meal complete: 2 sides are a must.
Toast? Yes, ma’am. Please!
This Recipe is:
- Simple.
- No frills- definitely not too fancy.
- Takes Less than an hour to make.
Prep
After gathering your ingredients, you’ll need:
- 1 medium saucepan
- cast iron skillet or nonstick frying pan
- cutting board
- sharp knife
- potholder
- 1 bowl
Cook
Start with the potatoes:
Cut up your potatoes and boil some salted water. Bring to a rolling boil:
Add potatoes and cook until you can pierce through with a fork.
Caramelize the onions and mushrooms:
Heat olive oil in a 10-inch skillet.
Add mushrooms, onions, salt and pepper.
Caramelize them to your liking.
Set aside on a plate so you can focus on the other side dishes.
Prepare the salad:
Arrange greens on a serving dish and top with tomatoes.
Finish the mashed potatoes:
Drain, return pot back to burner.
Melt the butter. Add milk, salt, and pepper.
Add potatoes and slowly mash.
Stir in fresh herbs.
Make the steaks:
Form half-pound rectangle shaped patties. Round the edges using your palms.
Using the same skillet you used for the veggies, heat oil to med-high.
I like to use oil with a high smoke point, but olive oil works well. Make sure it’s not cold pressed- that can be dangerous to your health!
Add the steaks, 2 at a time. Cook to desired temperature.
Remove and allow to rest on a plate.
Get that gravy ready:
This is the easiest step.
Cook according to package directions.
Cover and remove from heat.
Plating
Serve your steak on a large plate. Add a nice-sized dollop of mashed potatoes.
Make a well in the center of the potatoes and yes- add gravy.
Top the steak with the onions, mushrooms, and more gravy.
Don’t forget your toast!
Drizzle some dressing onto the salad. Mix and serve.
